A letter from Brion Gysin in the Beat Hotel, 9 rue Gît-le-Cœur, Paris to Roger Knoebber in Washington, D.C. shortly after Roger Knoebber left Paris – both for reasons of Gysin's jealousy and for military service.
The letter reads:
9 rue Git le Coeur Paris 16.4.62
My Dear Roger,
You’re a doll to write to me at all. And I did write a letter to Nick and will again. I’ve been penitent and appalled by my own behaviour — feeling like a vicious old fruit, unstable & dangerous to those I love best. Your letter takes a load off my shoulders if not off my conscience and NEVER under any circumstances any more gin!
Like a letter from home with real green money inside too. You don’t owe me a cent but what fun to spend your five bucks! Here are a couple of little pictures. Just chose for you and the other for Nick as a wedding present. There’s no one like either of you in the hotel or even the quarter these days.
It’s cold and miserable without you.
Bill, Ian, & Mikey are in London. Ben Aissa delighted to have your greeting. He has picked up again in a quite incredible way since the bloody war is over. Still no regular job though he may have a good one soon.
Ian and I are working on some new ideas to make the ghosts walk in public and we’ll walk them out with Philips in time. In other words, things are looking up all over but I’m not out of the woods until I’m out of this flea-bag hotel as Time calls it (– what low shits they are).
Bill has “The Ticket That Exploded” coming out in a day or so with the last page by me. He’s in London to see lawyers. He’s going to be a rich man soon.
Do look up Mohamed Larbi Scally 489 7th Ave San Francisco.
Also rich but stingy Texans Bill & Jo Anne ABEEL, 2840 Divisadero.
Or even, John Cooke Box 231 Carmel.
Is Jerry Brusline still at Big Sur? What News of Nick Smart? Bill Belli? People come & go but the Quarter is not the same without you.Jimmy the [Guide?] will be delighted that you remember him no matter how.
I think that Wm. will go to Greece for a while but I’ll stay on here making something out of it all. Look out for a new magazine called FLUXUS there should be a few pages by me in it.
Don’t strain yr wrist but write again sometime.
Love, Brion
